(WWJ) -- Detroit has opened a new walk-up COVID-19 vaccine clinic at the TCF Center as vaccination efforts ramp up statewide.
Aa all Michiganders ages 16 and up are now eligible to receive the vaccine as of Monday, the city is now offering walk-up vaccinations in addition to the drive-through clinic at the TCF Center.
The walk-up clinic will allow the city to administer up to 8,000 vaccines a day, expanding capabilities from the 5,000 shots per day offered by the drive-through clinic.
People receiving their first dose of the vaccine will have the option of using the drive-through or walk-up sites. People scheduling their appointments will now have a choice to go inside for their vaccine or remain in their car.
Elisa Malile, Deputy Chief of Staff for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, tells WWJ City Beat reporter Vickie Thomas the indoor clinic has an EMS room for emergencies, as well as a room for the elderly and those with disabilities.
The clinic has 10 stations with two vaccinators at each site, meaning 20 vaccinators in total will help the process move along quickly.
"You will be in and out of here in less than 30 minutes," Malile said.
Douglas Bosley, of Ypsilanti, works in Detroit and received his vaccine on Monday at the new walk-up clinic. He called the entire process "very, very smooth."
"The one thing that impressed me the most was getting here and seeing all the National Guard members here orchestrating everything. It’s really great to see them offering their service," Bosley said.
The city says those with scheduled walk-up appointments will be able to park for free on the TCF Center roof and get vaccinated inside the convention center.
Here are instructions for those who select the indoor walk-up option, according to the city:
1. Park for free on the roof top, entering off Congress, west of Washington Blvd.
2.Follow the signs to the indoor vaccination site.
3. Check in, then enter the ballroom and fill out the consent form.
4. After receiving the vaccination, individuals will remain for a 15-minute observation period.
All vaccinations must be scheduled first by calling 313-230-0505.
The new walk-up clinic comes as vaccine efforts ramp up statewide. The latest figures from the state show that more than 4.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered as of last week, with nearly 100,000 shots on Thursday alone.
More than 2.8 million Michiganders have received their first dose of the vaccine -- about 35 percent of Michigan’s population -- and another 1.7 million people are now fully vaccinated, roughly 21 percent of the state’s population.
To date, more than 150 million doses of the vaccine have been administered nationwide, according to the latest available data.
