DETROIT (WWJ) -- Fire crews are working to put out a two-alarm fire at a junkyard on Detroit’s east side Monday afternoon.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell tells WWJ a fire broke out around 2 p.m. Monday at a junk yard and metal processing facility, near I-94 and Mt. Elliott.

The fire did not appear to be impacting traffic in the area, but multiple WWJ Traffic tipsters say thick, billowing black smoke can be seen for miles on multiple area freeways and roads.

Officials are not yet sure how the fire was started. No injuries have been reported.

Fornell says the fire department has been called to the same location in the past and it took crews all night to get that fire under control.
