Detroit man accused of shooting wife in the head in their basement, charged with first-degree murder

DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit man is facing first-degree murder and other charges for allegedly shooting his wife to death early Tuesday morning.

Taquan White, 37, is accused of shooting his wife, 34-year-old Shauntel Lewis, in the head in the basement of their home in the 5070 block of Haverhill, just north of Warren Avenue on the city’s east side.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office says Detroit police officers were called to the home shortly before 1 a.m. on March 22 and found Lewis unresponsive in the basement. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have not released a possible motive in the shooting.

White is also facing one count of tampering with evidence, one count of felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm for the shooting.

Authorities did not elaborate on why White was charged with tampering with evidence.

He fled the scene, but was arrested by Detroit police officers later the same day, according to the prosecutor’s office.

White was arraigned on Thursday afternoon in 36th District Court and remanded to jail. He’s due back in court on April 7.
