DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man is facing charges of terrorism after allegedly threatening police officers over the weekend.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office says 60-year-old Bernard Smith is facing one charge of a threat of terrorism and six other weapons charges after an incident with Detroit police officers Friday.

Investigators say around 1 p.m. on April 2 officers responded to a parking complaint for Smith’s vehicles in a vacant lot across from a vacant residence in the 2400 block of Pingree Street. When officers arrived, they found Smith standing in the street next to the vacant lot and advised him to return to his home.

That’s when Smith allegedly made a 911 call and made death threats against the officers who were impounding his vehicles. Authorities did not elaborate on the details of the terrorist threats.

Smith was arrested later that same day after an investigation by Detroit police. Weapons and ammunition were in his possession at the time of the arrest, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“The threats that this defendant allegedly made will not be tolerated. They will be taken very seriously– whether the threats are against a public or non-public person,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement.

Smith is facing one count of threat of terrorism, two counts of felon in possession, two counts of felon in possession of ammunition and two counts of felony firearm.
