DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police took a 42-year-old Detroit man into custody after cell phone footage showed the suspect engaged in a road rage incident with one car and pulling a gun on a second driver while traveling through the city on I-96.

According to MSP, the altercation occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, as the drivers involved were headed east on I-96 near the I-94 interchange.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a suspect was road raging with another vehicle.

The victim -- driving a third, uninvolved car -- attempted to pass by and avoid the skirmish.

Instead, the suspect allegedly pulled up next to the victim and pointed a black handgun. This confrontation was recorded by the victim and shared with law enforcement along with the gunman's vehicle information.

Using the details provided, MSP investigators were able to identify the car's registered owner as their suspect.

Officers located the man at his place of employment and arrested him. It was determined that the suspect is a CPL holder and that the guns used in the altercation were fake.

"Just another example of poor decision making that is occurring on our roadways," stated MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw.

"We were lucky there wasn’t a crash or someone was hurt or killed. Remember, it’s just driving and not that important."

The suspect remains in police custody while awaiting potential charges.
