DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man has been charged with impersonating a school safety officer and running an alleged fundraising scam that targeted local businesses in recent weeks.
Authorities say 62-year-old Michael McCombs pretended to be a Detroit Public Schools safety officer when he approached local Detroit businesses and asked for monetary donations.
It is believed the alleged fraud occurred between December 28 and January 7, when a Detroit Police investigation led to McCombs' arrest.
While the exact amount of money obtained in the scheme remains unknown, a news release listing the charges suggests it was less than $200.
Nine official charges have been filed against McCombs, who was arraigned Friday. The defendant stands accused of soliciting charitable donations, presenting under false pretenses and impersonating a peace officer.
McCombs is currently being held on a $10,000 personal bond. His probable cause conference is scheduled for Friday, January 20, with a preliminary exam set for the following week.
