
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 51-year-old Detroit man was arraigned on a First Degree Murder charge in connection to an unsolved homicide of a Detroit woman that occurred 25 years ago, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced on Friday.
Johnny Joseph Yenshaw of Detroit was charged by Worthy for allegedly strangling Sonya Dockery to death in 1997; the victim was 33-year-sold at the time.
According to Worthy, officers with the Detroit Police Department were dispatched on December 1, 1997 to the area of James Couzens Service Drive and Sussex Street in Detroit where they found Dockery unresponsive. Police noted strangulation marks and lacerations to her neck; attempts to revive her failed and medics pronounced her dead on scene.
A current investigation into the unsolved murder by the Detroit Police Department led detectives to Yenshaw; he was arrested on March 30, 2022.
According to police, Yenshaw "strangled the victim, fatally injuring her, before fleeing the scene."
Further details have not been released pending Yenshaw's preliminary examination on April 25.
The suspect was charged with one count of First Degree Murder and is currently being held in jail.
Yenshaw's next court date is set for Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for April 18, 2022, at 8:30 a.m.
