DETROIT (WWJ) – A man is dead and a woman is recovering after a crash Sunday morning that left the Southfield Freeway closed for several hours on Detroit’s west side.

It happened around 4 a.m. along the northbound lanes of the Southfield when a woman driving an SUV slammed into the back of a white sedan that was stopped in the right lane near Grand River Avenue, according to Michigan State Police.

The 38-year-old Detroit man driving the stopped car was killed on impact, MSP officials said.

The 26-year-old Detroit woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said.

Authorities have not said why the man’s car was stopped on the freeway. The investigation is still ongoing.

The freeway was closed at Grand River for about three hours, but has since reopened.
