ROMULUS (WWJ) - Detroit Metro Airport has consistently earned some of the nation's top honors for on-time departures and best customer satisfaction, but now it's earned yet another round of approving marks — this time for its airport food.

Food and Wine Magazine named Metro Airport as one of the top ten U.S. airports for its grub, saying the facility offers travelers a balanced restaurant rosters that caters to those looking for a quick bite or a cup of coffee while dashing to make their connection, or a longer dining experience for those with lengthy layovers.

Specifically, though, the publication named two Michigan-based restaurants in both the McNamara Terminal and Warren Cleage Evans Terminal as something travelers cannot pass without trying.

"Those looking for something quick can’t leave without a snack from Leo’s Coney Island (McNamara Terminal) or National Coney Island (Warren Cleage Evans Terminal)," Food and Wine Magazine gushed.

Those who have more time were urged to try Atwater Brewery, an outpost of a local favorite in Warren Cleage Evans Terminal, or Embers Lounge that offers Michigan-produced wines and Italian fare in the Warren Cleage Evans Terminal.

Earning the #10 spot out of 11 ranked airports, Michigan's Detroit Metro earns its honor among other installations that offer dining experiences from "farm-to-flight provisions to celebrity-owned restaurants."

"These American airports [received] love from our readers in our first annual Global Tastemakers awards," Food and Wine Magazine stated. "Global Tastemakers is our first-ever reader’s choice awards, celebrating the best culinary destinations in the U.S. and abroad."

The publications said their readers voted based on travel completed within the past three years and rated categories including restaurants and bars, cities, hotels, airports, airlines, and cruises.

"There’s something romantic about saddling up to a bar or table in an airport terminal with a suitcase at your feet, people-watching in full force, and a travel day cocktail in hand," the magazine stated. "An airport terminal is liminal, the people are nameless, and everyone has a single goal: hop on the plane and try to get comfortable. Speaking to that last part, getting a good meal ahead of take-off can make all the difference between a good day and a really bad day."

Airports in San Francisco, Atlanta and Minnesota also made the list. See all the winners at foodandwine.com/globaltastemakers.
