Detroit parents charged after 4-year-old girl shoots herself at home

(WWJ) It's another tragic, and preventable case of a small child seriously injured after finding a gun at home.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has announced criminal charges against the 21-year-old Detroit parents of a 4-year-old girl who shot herself on Tuesday.

At around 3 p.m., in the 1900 block of Chene Street in Detroit, it's alleged that the child picked up an unsecured handgun in the home and fired. She was hit in the right hip and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

It was first reported that the child was shot in a park, but investigators were quickly able to determine what really happened.

Fortunately, the girl's condition has since been upgraded to stable and her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Jesse Briggs has been charged with one count of Second-Degree Child Abuse and one count of Felony Firearm. Shamira Houston has been charged with one count of Tampering with Evidence.

The couple was scheduled to be arraigned in 36th District Court on Friday.

Detroit residents should note that gun locks are distributed for free through the Detroit Police Department, along with information on gun safety. Check with your local precinct for current availability.
