DETROIT (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after an apparently accidental early-morning shooting left one teenager dead and another injured on Detroit’s northwest side.

Detroit police officials tell WWJ it appears a teen boy was handling a gun around 5 a.m. in the 16800 block of Mark Twain Street – near McNichols Road and Hubbell Avenue – when he accidentally fired it.

Officials say a 15-year-old was fatally wounded, while a 16-year-old was struck by the same gunshot. That teen is hospitalized in stable condition.

Police are still investigating and will send a report to the prosecutor’s office to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Authorities did not say how the teens knew each other or whether anyone else was inside the home when the shot was fired.
