DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police say Christmas “will be a lot brighter” for some area families who were recently victims of porch piracy.

In something out of Dr. Seuss’s “The Grinch,” police say officers from the 2nd Precinct arrested a suspect who had more than 40 stolen packages in his vehicle, just weeks before Christmas.

Authorities say all 41 packages found during the arrest were addressed to residents in Farmington and Farmington Hills and will be reunited with owners in time for Christmas.

Police released video of officers bringing packages out of the 2nd Precinct on Wednesday, presumably on their way to the people who purchased them. While authorities have not said what the stolen packages contained, the video shows some of the boxes marked as being from the likes of Macy’s, Ulta, Cuisinart and Calphalon.

The recovery happened around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of West McNichols Road and Freeland Street on the city’s west side.

As officers Corey Davis and Officer Malcolm Jackson were headed north on Greenfield towards McNichols, a man flagged them down and told them the driver of a black Dodge Caravan had just fled the scene of a crash.

A short time later, the officers spotted the van and initiated a traffic stop. As they were talking to the driver, they noticed an unusually large amount of packages in the back of the vehicle.

Police say the driver couldn’t give a good explanation as to why the packages were in the van.

Officer Davis then contacted police in Farmington and Farmington Hills regarding the packages and the departments told him they had been reported as stolen.

The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to the Detroit Detention Center. No information about charges has been revealed yet.
