DETROIT (WWJ) -- Crime numbers are down across the city, according to the latest report from Detroit Police Chief James White, but carjackings are still on the rise.

White addressed the Board of Police Commissioners with the latest numbers:

• Criminal homicides down 14%
• Sex assaults down 24%
• Aggravated assaults down 21%
• Non-fatal shootings down 19%

While these crimes are decreasing, White says police are planning to crack down on the growing rise in carjackings.

White says the carjackers are mostly comprised of teen gang members, who don't necessarily want the car, but want what's inside -- like airbags, steering wheels, laptops and other items.

The Detroit Police Department recently arrested a gang of carjackers, in which the youngest member was just 16-years-old. This gang is linked to at least five carjackings in the city.
