DETROIT (WWJ) It was an unexpected turn of events for police officers who pulled over a stolen vehicle in Detroit, only to discover a fellow officer in the passenger seat.
Charges are pending against a Detroit cop who was caught riding in a stolen Dodge Charger while off duty over the weekend.
Police said the incident happened early Sunday morning at Fullerton and Washburn on the city's west side, when officers initiated a traffic stop the car, reported stolen in Ohio a couple of months ago, and the driver and passenger attempted to flee.
After crashing into another vehicle, the two suspects in the Charger — including the cop — tried to escape on foot, police said.
They were apprehended and the officer was arrested and jailed, but was later released pending further review of the situation.
Assistant Chief David LeValley said the officer is suspended with pay at this time, but that Detroit Police Chief James White Thursday afternoon will request that the Board of Police Commissioners withhold the officer’s pay.
LeValley told reporters that it's an honor and privilege to be a member of the Detroit Police Department.
He's disheartened by the allegations in this case.
"If they're all true, it's really a slap in the face to the approximately 2,500 people that wear the badge today, and do it with honor and respect," LeValley said. "There's no room on the department for conduct like this, or for officers like this."
The officer allegedly involved works on the east side, and has reportedly been with the department since 2019. No other information has been released at this time.
