New Detroit Police graduate quits force following brawl in Greektown

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A newly-graduated Detroit police officer has resigned following a brawl in Greektown that was caught on camera.

WWJ’s Mike Campbell reports that the officer was set to attend a hearing on August 31 to determine the fate of his job, but instead, opted to quit the force.

The DPD cop was involved in an off-duty fight just several hours after graduating from the police academy as a probationary officer.

He was said to be under the influence of alcohol when he got into the confrontation in the early hours of August 21, and was later arrested and taken to jail.

Video of the incident appears to show his police badge attached to his belt as he hurls punches at another man.

Following the fight, the officer was relieved of his probationary duties and suspended, but not immediately terminated from the department

"I’m extremely disappointed in the behavior and actions of this probationary officer. His conduct does not represent the hardworking men and women of this department," Chief James White said.

Despite his resignation, the now ex-officer's case was reportedly re-submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday night, meaning that Detroit police may continue to pursue charges against him.
