DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police have confiscated more than $2 million worth of narcotics in a two-day crackdown on crime.
Operation Saniyah was carried out last week, less than two weeks after 11-year-old Saniyah Pugh was killed when a stray bullet pierced her grandmother’s home on June 4. Authorities say the shot was fired from a nearby backyard.
Last week’s operation targeted “dangerous people, places and behavior” on the city’s east side on Tuesday, and neighborhoods on the west side on Wednesday.
Detroit police on Monday released the preliminary statistics from Operation Saniyah, including the seizure of an estimated $2.3 million worth of narcotics. Authorities did not detail exactly what type of drugs were seized.
Authorities say they made 85 arrests, recovered 22 weapons and issued 1,297 tickets during the operation. Officers conducted 782 traffic stops, recovered three vehicles and impounded 44 more vehicles.
Police officials did not release any information about the people who were arrested during Operation Saniyah or why they were arrested.
Two people have been arrested and charged in connection with Saniyah’s death.
