DETROIT (WWJ) – A 29-year-old woman has been arraigned on charges in the death of her children's father in Detroit last Saturday.
Shanitra Janise Newson is facing two counts — second-degree murder and felony firearm —after allegedly shooting 30-year-oldJamel Sandifer to death on the city's east side, according to authorities.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Sandifer was Newson's boyfriend, and they lived together in a home in the 14900 block of Bringard Drive, in the area of Gratiot and Hayes Street.
Detroit Police said the incident unfolded at around 4:10 p.m. on March 19 during a domestic dispute.
It is alleged that the couple was arguing when the situation escalated, Newson pulled out a handgun and fatally wounded the victim.
She then fled the scene but was later arrested. The gun was recovered by police at the scene.
Newson was arraigned Tuesday afternoon in 36th District Court and given a $250,000/10% bond with the conditions that she wear a GPS tether and remain under house arrest.
She will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for April 5.
