ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - The mural on the water tower at the Detroit Zoo is getting a facelift -- and drivers along I-696 in Oakland County noticed the change during their morning commute on Tuesday.

According to WWJ's Charlie Langton, drivers were seeing white where some of the mural has already been replaced. Officials said a temporary wrap will go up to celebrate the zoo’s 95th anniversary.

"But look at it," Langton said. "It's being painted over... from the rooftop parking you can see that they started already. It looks like its in pretty bad shape, it does need a little covering."

The wrap is expected to go up soon, but it appears officials are painting the tower white first before it is put on. A spokesperson said the temporary wrap will remain in place from this summer until next spring.

At this time, officials have not said what the wrap will feature. The zoo's water tower is one of Metro Detroit's most recognizable landmarks where it sits straddling the border of Huntington Woods and Royal Oak off 10 Mile Road.

There no word on what will go on the tower after the temporary wrap.
