(WWJ) -- Detroit’s annual Ford Fireworks display is set for Monday night, taking place from the suburbs for a second straight year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fireworks will be launched from three barges on Lake St. Clair near Metro Beach, and aired live on WDIV.
While Lake St. Clair Metropark will be closed to the public by land, many metro Detroiters are expected to take in the show from the water.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division says last year’s turnout was large and they are expecting even more this year.
The Marine Division has set boundaries for an exclusionary zone for boaters around the barges where the display will be launched.
The barges will be located about a quarter mile off shore from the “Day Sail Launch,” and for the safety of spectators, there will be a more than half-mile exclusionary zone.
The zone will be marked with buoys around the barges, leading all the way to Huron Point.
Officials say non-emergency and non-Parade Company-approved vessels or watercraft are prohibited from operating, anchoring or paddling within the zone. The zone and all other marine laws will be enforced by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, as well as other law enforcement marine agencies on the lake.
The broadcast will begin at 8 p.m., with a "summer spectacular" special highlighting summer fun across metro Detroit, before the fireworks display is set to begin at 9 p.m.
The sheriff’s office is also asking all mariners to maintain a lane near Huron Point for emergency vessels to enter and exit the exclusionary zone. Officials say this lane will not be marked, but will be necessary for any possible emergency response needed on the lake.
They’re also reminding boaters to provide ample space between other vessels while anchored and to avoid overcrowding.
Boaters are reminded to operate at slow, no-wake speeds when within 100 feet of anchored vessels, the shoreline or any other fixed objects, such as docks. The Black Creek and Clinton River are also slow, no-wake zones.
