DETROIT (WWJ) – The search is on for a teen described as “young and dangerous” after he nearly killed a Detroit police officer during an attempted arrest Sunday night on the city’s west side.

Detroit police officials say 15-year-old Michael Malik Brown nearly hit an officer with a stolen white GMC Yukon when he rammed into and over a police car in a gas station near the intersection of 8 Mile and Glastonbury, just west of the Southfield Freeway.

DPD’s Christopher Graveline told reporters Tuesday officers responded to an armed robbery call at a gas station on Fenkell around 5 p.m. Sunday. During the investigation, police learned a white 2012 GMC Yukon had been carjacked by a person described as a Black male, approximately 6-feet-tall with a slim build and armed with a silver handgun.

Later that evening, officers on a drag racing detail spotted the stolen SUV during rolling surveillance in the area of Lahser and McNichols. The officers told dispatch the SUV pulled into a gas station at 8 Mile and Glastonbury and marked cars were sent to the scene.

When officers tried to arrest the suspect, the Yukon backed into a patrol car, knocking an officer to the ground, and then rolled over the top of another scout car that had tried to box in the stolen SUV.

The Yukon nearly fell on top of an officer as it went up and over the scout car. Officials said the officer on the ground had to roll out of the way as the SUV tilted to the point of nearly tipping over.

That’s when the officer on the ground and two others fired nine shots at the Yukon. Authorities say the SUV was hit by eight rounds, but evidence suggests the driver and the others involved were not hit by the gunfire.

Brown exited the parking lot and the surveilling officers who initially spotted the stolen SUV followed it three blocks before it crashed into a tree. The teen escaped police after the crash.

Graveline said an adult had already exited the SUV and surrendered to police before it slammed into the scout car, while another adult exited as Brown began to flee. Both were arrested, though authorities have not released their names or ages.

Police are still searching for Brown and asking anyone who knows where he is to come forward.

“He’s dangerous and someone that we have to get off the streets immediately before he victimizes someone else,” Detroit Police Chief James White said during Tuesday’s press conference.

“As you saw with the driving over the scout car and attempting to run the officer over and the officer literally having to roll from under the front of the car as it was approaching him, he’s not simply going to stop,” he said.

Anyone who has information on his whereabouts should call Detroit police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
