DEARBORN (WWJ) -- The 29-year-old man who fled a traffic stop, then struck and killed another driver, has been formally charged with second-degree murder.

Chance Robert Murphy failed to pull over for a Wayne County Sheriff's Officer Monday morning and instead initiated a police chase on eastbound Michigan Ave. During the pursuit, the suspect ran a red light at Gulley Rd and crashed his Ford E-350 van into a Chevrolet Trax.

Following the collision, Murphy attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement.

"Our officers responded and set up a perimeter around the scene and were quickly able to locate the suspect," Dan Bartok with Dearborn Heights Police said. "After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody."

Police told WWJ the Murphy was wanted on several warrants for shoplifting and resisting arrest in Livonia and Redford. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The driver of the Trax -- a 61-year-old Lincoln Park woman -- was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Friday, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office approved a four-count felony complaint against Murphy. Those charges include second-degree murder, first degree fleeing and eluding, reckless driving causing death and resisting an officer.

Murphy was arraigned via video call, and his bail was set at $500,000. If released on bond, Murphy will be required to wear a GPS tether.

His next court date is January 20, 2023.
