SCIO TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A driver got off a Washtenaw County freeway just in time on Friday afternoon after his smoking vehicle erupted into flames.
The Scio Township Fire Department said via Mlive that crews were called out to a gas station at intersection of Baker and Jackson roads just off I-94 around 2:50 p.m. on reports of a car fire.
The flames were well underway by the time firefighters got to the scene, officials added. The hood to the car had melted as estimated 4-foot flames leapt from the engine compartment.
Officials were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported.
Through their investigation, fire crews learned the driver of the vehicle was traveling on I-94 when he realized his car was producing smoke. He exited the freeway at Baker Road, just west of Ann Arbor, and had just pulled into a gas station parking lot when his vehicle burst into flames.
At this time, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
Fire officials said they were able to clear the scene just after 3 p.m.
