DETROIT (WWJ) - A Clinton Township driver was seriously injured after he failed to slow down for a curve on a Detroit freeway ramp and crashed his vehicle into a concrete wall early Saturday morning.
According to Michigan State Police, troopers were on patrol around 5:15 a.m. on Aug.5 in the area where I-96 connects to I-75 in Detroit when they saw a wrecked vehicle that appeared to have run off the freeway.
The driver, identified as a 25-year-old Clinton Township man, was found alive, but critically injured and trapped under the passenger side dashboard, MSP stated.
Personnel from the Detroit Fire Department had to cut the man from the wreckage before he was rushed to a local hospital.
Based off their preliminary investigation, troopers found that the driver was traveling east on I-96 when he took the ramp to northbound I-75 at a high rate of speed. The man was unable to slow his vehicle down for a curve and lost control.
According to troopers, the vehicle ended up slamming into the right concrete ramp wall before bouncing off and crashing into a light pole in the median.
State police said the man did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were also factors in the crash.
No other details were released. The investigation remains ongoing.
