ANN ARBOR TWP. (WWJ) – The search is on for the suspect in a fatal shooting on a busy Ann Arbor freeway Tuesday afternoon.

Michigan State Police were called to westbound M-14 near Earhart Road – just east of US-23 – shortly before 4:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.

When troopers showed up they found a person in a vehicle on the shoulder with an apparent gunshot wound, officials with the MSP First District said on Twitter.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not immediately release any information about the victim.

Authorities say it is not known what happened to the driver, though preliminary investigation “points towards another vehicle involved which fled the scene.”

Witnesses told police a black, four-door older model sedan was seen fleeing the scene.

The driver of the sedan is believed to be a man wearing a hoodie, MSP officials said.

An eyewitness to the shooting told WWJ's Charlie Langton the suspect was wearing a "baggy bluish, gray hoodie and baggy pants."

The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was driving home from work Tuesday and heard two loud "bangs." While at first she thought it may have been something in her wheel well, she said she looked to her right and saw the shooting taking place.

"I saw the guy standing at the car the was behind him, he was standing in the window with a gun, shooting the guy in the head, like over and over," she told Langton.

She estimated the suspect was approximately 5-foot-10 and had a "thinner build."

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen something or knows something about the crime to leave a message at http://michtip.state.mi.us or call 877-616-4677 or 1-855-MICH-TIP.

Westbound M-14 was closed at M-153 (Ford Road) as police investigated. WWJ Traffic’s Jim Hughes reports drivers can used Ford Road as a way around the crash.

The freeway closed shortly before 5 p.m. and remained closed, as of 9:15 p.m.
