PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A suspect is dead and an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy is in the hospital following a shooting early Friday in Pontiac.

According to the sheriff's office, the situation unfolded at around 6 a.m. as deputies were dispatched to investigate a call about a car that had stopped in the road, and was blocking a driveway.

As deputies walked up to the vehicle, which was parked but running, they discovered that the driver was asleep, with a gun next to him.

One deputy took the gun and placed it on the hood of the car, ordering the driver to place his hands behind his back.

When the driver failed to comply and "was resisting being detained," according to the sheriff's office, the other deputy tried to get into the car on the passenger's side.

The driver hit the gas, according to the sheriff's office, crashing into a patrol car while the deputy was partially hanging out of the car.

That's when the deputy on the passenger side fired one shot, killing the driver, officials said.

The deputy was taken to a hospital for treatment of some injuries. His or her condition is unknown at this time.

The OCSO said the driver had more than a dozen felony convictions — including assault, gun crimes. drug crimes, and fleeing and eluding police — and was on parole.

No names have been released.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
