DETROIT (WWJ) -- Mayor Mike Duggan is kicking off the 8th year of Grow Detroit's Young Talent program for young Detroiters looking for job experience.

Since launching in 2015, GDYT has provided and trained more than 54,000 youth, between the ages of 14 and 24, with up to 120 hours of summer work experience.

Some of the jobs to choose from involve community cleanups, retail, event planning, accounting and the Junior Police or Fire Cadets.

"We are going to hire 8,000 young people this year through our partnerships with just about every company in this town," said Mayor Mike Duggan. "This has just been a phenomenal initiative, and the support we've had through our philanthropic partners have been terrific."

According to the City of Detroit, there are three tiers in the program:

1. The career exploration tier introduces young people to first-time work and career opportunities through community service, team projects and job shadowing. This tier is for youth with little to no previous work experience -- typically, 14 to 16-year-olds.

2. The ready for work tier is typically for 16 to 24-year-olds who have some previous work experience. It places youth with a host employer or in a vocational training experience while continuing to build career readiness skills.

3. The competitive career pathways Internship tier is for young people with previous work experience and a desire to focus on a specific career pathway with a host employer. This tier is typically for 17 to 24-year-olds.

The young individuals must be permanent residents of the City of Detroit and be eligible to work in the United States.
