A man and a woman died at the scene of a six-car crash at around 2:25 a.m. Saturday on I-94 in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.

MSP said the driver of a Jeep Liberty involved in the crash showed “signs of impairment” and was arrested.

Police said one of the two who died was driving a Ford Fusion on eastbound I-94 near Mount Elliot Street when they lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the center median barrier. Then, the Fusion was rear-ended by a Kia.

The driver of the Kia stopped on the right shoulder “and the Fusion stopped sideways, blocking the left lane of I-94,” said police. At some point, the two occupants of the Ford Fusion stepped outside of the vehicle and the driver of a Dodge Charger stopped at the crash scene to help.

However, the Jeep Liberty driver – who was in the left lane – struck the man and woman who were standing outside the Ford Fusion before stopping against the vehicle. The man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

Then, the driver of a black Kia SUV sideswiped the Fusion and the Charger before stopping against the median wall and the Charger was rear-ended by the driver of a GMC SUV.

“The driver of the Kia was transported to a hospital for medical treatment,” said Click on Detroit.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
