Police encounter with man who killed DPD officer Loren Courts on May 30

(WWJ) The Eastpointe family of Ehmani Davis struggled with him for years before he shot and killed Detroit Police officer Loren Courts, seeking mental health assistance for the teen without success.

Davis, 19, had multiple encounters with law enforcement, including at least seven encounters with Eastpointe police over the last several years, according to a report by WXYZ-TV.

Video obtained exclusively by 7 Action News through a public records request shows Davis shirtless, ranting and clearly distributed during outside his home on May 30, 2022.

The body cam footage shows Davis pacing and yelling at police and family members after his mother called 9-1-1. Also in the video, the mom asks police to take her son away, saying she doesn't want him back in the house in his current state.

The mother tells police: "...He's been having these problems since he was a kid, since he was a teenager, and every time I call the police, try to get help from the state, because he's not threatening to kill me or himself or he's not on drugs, you guys — not you, personally — they won't do anything."

Records obtained by WXYZ show the troubles date back as far as 2019, when Davis' mom called 9-1-1 to report her son was having a violent outburst, and she didn't know what to do with him. On another occasion, Davis was take by ambulance for a mental health petition sought by his mom; although it's unclear whether Davis was treated or what, if anything, came of the request.

This incident caught on video happened one day after police said Davis entered an Eastpointe gun store with a friend who bought him the Romarm/Cugir Draco, 7.62 caliber pistol that Davis would use to kill Courts.

The Macomb County Prosecutor on a warrant request for Davis came in on June 21 and was granted a day later on a charge of gun possession. However, Davis remained free while a handgun it's alleged he was carrying was being analyzed at a crime lab.

Courts, a husband and father of two children, was fatally shot on July 6 after he responded to a call about a gunman "firing shots indiscriminately" on Joy Road near Marlow Street on Detroit's west side.

The DPD said Courts was shot by Davis almost immediately upon arriving at the scene. Other DPD officers returned fire, killing Davis.
