(WWJ) – Situated between Mack and Warren Avenues and Conner and St. Jean Streets, the Stellantis Mack Assembly Plant on Detroit’s east side is historic. The location has been a huge part of the global auto scene.
Detroiters have been building cars there for over a century, excluding when it was shuttered in the 1980s. The plant was rebuilt and reopened in 1990 and operations expanded in 2021.
Since the expansion, Mack Assembly has been slapped with multiple environmental violations and residents in the area say it smells. Stellantis insists it has cleaned up the site, but on a new Daily J podcast, WWJ’s Zach Clark met some neighbors who say otherwise.
“The smell is very bad,” one man told Clark on Beniteau Street near the plant.
“It messes with your respiratory system, it has your throat sore, itchy, coughing, eyes watery, itching,” another man said.
They both said they deal with it every day and they feel the company and government aren't doing enough to fix it.
"All we can do is complain, hope and wish that something happens. That's all we can do," the neighbor said. "Bottom line, nothing has been done. I've been over here for two or three hours and my throat is itchy and it's feeling like it's sore."
