PONTIAC (WWJ) -- An elderly woman has died in a fire that tore through her Pontiac home early Monday morning.

Waterford Fire Chief Matt Covey -- which dispatched the city of Pontiac -- tells WWJ’s Sandra McNeil that they the received a call out to the home on Mohawk Street around 1 a.m.

When crews arrived at the scene, sheriff’s deputies attempted to gain access into the home to rescue the woman, who reportedly had a disability.

By the time they were able to get inside, they discovered the woman dead in the basement of the home. It is believed she may have died from smoke inhalation, but an autopsy is being conducted.

Covey says the fire appears to be accidental, but investigators are on the scene looking into the cause.
