(WWJ) A 19-year-old Wixom man has been charged in connection with the murder of a Detroit mother—gunned down after taking her kids to school.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Jarren Cox in the death of Andrea Tucker. Cox is the son of Defendant David Hammond, the ex-boyfriend of Tucker who had been charged in a domestic violence arson case where she was the complainant. Police announced a second arrest on Monday, but did not release Cox's name at the time.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, Cox shot and killed 40-year-old Tucker in the driveway of her home on Carlisle near 8 Mile and Kelley on November 17. She had just returned from taking her children, 11 and 15, to school.

Police said her killer ambushed her.

"She pulled in her driveway and exited her vehicle and was about to enter her home when the assailant came from, basically lying in wait... and armed with a semiautomatic fired multiple shots, killing our victim," Detroit Police Cmdr. Michael McGinnis said in an earlier press conference.

She was shot multiple times and died.

Cox has been charged with First Degree Murder, Felony Firearm, and Witness Intimidation. He was arraigned Thursday and held without bond. He is due back in court on December 10. Both police and prosecutors tell WWJ they are still working to gather the facts of the case.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the system failed Tucker when she reached out for help following the domestic violence incident involving Hammond. Hammond appeared in court in early November on charges of arson, home invasion, aggravated domestic violence and felonious assault. He was ordered to have no contact with her.

He did not obey that order, according to a judge.

"She was a mother, raising her children, reached out for assistance, and the system was not there for her." White said. “That’s just a fact.”
