WARREN (WWJ) -- New details have been emerged about the driver who died after crashing his car into a pole going over 100 miles per hour in Warren early Monday morning.

Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer says 29-year-old Devin Smith Smith wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when he lost control of his 1992 Grand Mercury Cougar around 4 a.m. on Groesbeck Highway and 8 Mile Road, and crashed into a utility pole.

Investigators say there’s no indication Smith tried to hit the brakes before the crash, and he was declared dead at the scene by Warren Police.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene, calling it a "terrible, terrible car crash."

An autopsy will be performed to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Dwyer also said there was a felony warrant out for Smith’s arrest stemming from a theft at a business in Roseville, but no other details were given.

Warren PD closed Groesbeck and all but one eastbound lane on 8 Mile while they investigated the scene.
