FBI investigation finds ex-Hazel Park treasurer embezzled money from residents

(WWJ) A former treasurer for Hazel Park is facing charges for embezzling cash payments from residents of the Oakland County city.

Following an FBI investigation, Jo Ann Hubbs is accused of paying for personal expenses thanks to two checks meant for resident property taxes – totaling $4,656.98 – as the treasurer for Hazel Park in July 2018. Hubbs was terminated from her position that year after her alleged misconduct was discovered.

Hubbs, Hubbs-Reeves, is charged with embezzlement by a public official or agent, $50 or more, a ten-year felony; official misconduct in office, a common-law five-year felony; and embezzlement by an employee or agent, $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, a five-year felony.

The charges were announced Tuesday by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

“I appreciate the work the FBI completed to present this investigation to my office. We will continue to partner with the bureau on this case,” Nessel said.

The FBI referred this case back in August to the Department of Attorney General for consideration. This case resulted from a FBI Detroit-Area Public Corruption Task Force investigation.

"The FBI is committed to working with our state and local partners to protect the integrity of city government and to take strong action against those who seek to personally benefit by corrupting their elected positions," Timothy Waters said, who is the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Detroit Division.

Hubbs is scheduled to be arraigned this Thursday at 10:15 a.m. at the 43rd District Court in Oakland County.
