DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is beginning work on the final piece of the east riverfront with a groundbreaking at the Uniroyal Site on Wednesday.

The last leg of the project will complete the goal of the 3.5 miles of Riverwalk along the East Riverfront, and connect riverfront parks to Belle Isle.

The groundbreaking ceremony, which was not open to the public due to COVID-19 precautions, took place this morning at 11:00 a.m., with remarks made by Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Chairman, Matt Cullen; and President & CEO, Mark Wallace.

Located at 6480 W. Jefferson Avenue, the Uniroyal Site includes the MacArthur Bridge (also known as the Belle Isle Bridge) and the vacant land before it.

The area will be transformed into part of the Detroit Riverfront East Walkway, connecting it with Gabriel Richard Park to the east and Mt. Elliott Park to the west
