Fire at Shelby Twp. roofing company sends thick, black smoke into the air, causes traffic backups

SHELBY TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – Thick black smoke could be seen for miles in Macomb County on Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out at a roofing company.

Shelby Township firefighters were pouring water on the storage area at Lutz Roofing on 22 Mile Road between Ryan and Shelby Roads.

22 Mile was blocked due to the fire, with traffic heavy between Ryan and Shelby, WWJ Traffic reporter KT said. It remained closed as of 7:30 p.m., several hours after the fire broke out.

People working in the area tell WWJ that roofing materials were being stored in the building.

Shelby Township police issued a hazardous air quality alert and residents were being told to avoid the areas of 22 Mile and Ryan and 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.

Photos posted to Twitter showed the smoke billowing into the air.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
