ROMULUS (WWJ) - Firefighters in Wayne County have extinguished a large fire that burned through several businesses in a strip mall early Tuesday morning, officials said, but the cause is believed to be "suspicious."
Romulus Fire Chief Kevin Krause, told WWJ's Mike Campbell the blaze broke out at Romulus City Drugs at 9301 on Wayne Road earlier this morning. It caused damage to some of the businsess located in the strip mall, which consists of two buildings in the shape of an "L."
"It's suspicious, as far as we can see." Krause said of the fire. "...We were able to get a good knockdown on the fire and contain it to one unit in the strip mall so very minor damage to the surrounding units."
The chief told Campbell that one unit was affected by fire and another unit sustained smoke and water damage.
Campbell said the other business in the same building include a hair salon, a tattoo parlor and an insurance office -- it appears the flames started at their the salon or the parlor, he reported.
Wayne Road is currently closed in both directions of Wick Road at this hour -- travelers to Metro Airport could face delays as emergency personnel continue to work the very active scene.
While the flames are mostly out, crews are working on hot spots, Krause said.
The exact cause cause of the fire remains under investigation.
