WHITEFISH TWP. (WWJ) -- Fire crews are fighting a wildfire blazing across a pine forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that DNR firefighters and local partners were working to suppress the fire, estimated at 35 acres in size, in Chippewa County's Whitefish Township.
Shortly before noon, officials said the fire had been contained.
"Currently at this time the fire is controlled," Rob Shields, Michigan Department of Natural Resources fire supervisor for Sault Ste. Marie management unit, told WWJ's Greg Bowman. "Additional resources are on scene as we speak, working towards containment and extinguishment. At this time, there are no structures threatened."
The DNR said what being called the "Goose Marsh Fire," due to its proximity to a nearby marsh, was first reported at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
It's burning in a sandy, "difficult to access" pine forest, officials said, and no structures are threatened at this time. Emergency crews have been using bulldozers, large water units and all-terrain vehicles to access and fight the blaze.
The DNR is being assisted by firefighters from the Whitefish Township Fire Department and Hulbert Township Fire Department, as well as Whitefish Township EMS, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Bay Mills Police Department and Chippewa County Central Dispatch.
Beginning Tuesday night, the sheriff's office on social media urged the public to stay safely out of the area.
Whitefish Twp. is located in the northeastern portion of the U.P., on the western side of Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior, about 60 miles by car from Sault Ste. Marie, and 55 miles north of the Mackinac Bridge.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
