GAYLORD (WWJ) -- Just as we started to move into fall weather in Metro Detroit, a different part of Michigan has already jumped ahead a season.

The city of Gaylord in the Upper Peninsula witnessed its first snowfall just before 8 a.m. on Friday.

A video tweeted by the Gaylord National Weather Service this morning shows flakes lightly falling outside of their offices in Northern Michigan.

“Here’s to plenty more over the next 6 months!” they wrote.

WWJ’s Beth Fisher spoke with NWS Gaylord meteorologist Matt Gillen, who says these flakes weren’t recording-breaking, but still a came a bit earlier than average.

“An early season shot of cold air [is] not all that uncommon for October in Northern Michigan, but it’s certainly a little early,” Gillen said. “The average first accumulating snowfall in the Gaylord area isn’t usually until about October 25 or 26.”

Gillen added that there were also reports of snow in Marquette, and near the Bellaire, Atlanta, and Torch Lake areas.

There have been no sightings of the white stuff in Metro Detroit quite yet, but the area will experience some chillier weather this weekend after getting up into the 70s earlier this week.

On Friday and Saturday, highs are expected to linger in the mid-to-upper 50s, with lows getting down to the mid-30s and low-40s.

Then, on Sunday, a beautiful fall day is on the horizon for Metro Detroit, with partly sunny skies and a high around 64 degrees.
