Flooded freeways closed, thousands without power after storm Friday in metro Detroit

(WWJ) It's a familiar story this summer: Drenching thunderstorms have left roads and freeways flooded, and thousands without power, in metro Detroit Friday.

Drivers were urged to use caution as forecasters said rainfall in an afternoon storm would reduce visibility, cause slippery road conditions, and bring localized flooding in spots.

As of 4 p.m. Friday, the following were closed due to flooding:

- M-10, The Lodge, in both directions at Evergreen
- Eastbound I-94 at Conner (westbound has reopened)
- M-39, the Southfield Freeway, between Ford Rd and I-96.

Drivers should note that westbound I-96 Local at Schaefer was also closed, but has since reopened. (Check @WWJTraffic on Twitter for updates).

Flooding was also reported on local roads in Dearborn and Novi.

Meanwhile, there are some fresh power outages to report.

The DTE Energy Outage Map showed more than 25,000 homes and businesses were off the grid, as of late Friday afternoon.

While the outages were scattered throughout the area, the larger outages are in Canton, Dearborn, Detroit and Farmington Hills.

These storms comes as thousands of metro Detroiters just recently had their power restored following the last round of severe weather.

Officials with Michigan State Police Emergency Management have urged residents to take precautions, with heat indices expected to reach as high as 100 degrees on Saturday. MSP noted that power outage could knock out air conditioning, and make matters worse in the muggy conditions.

More storms are also possible through the weekend, AccuWeather says.
