FLINT TWP., Mich. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in Genesee County after an apparent crash on I-75 left a full-grown black bear dead early Monday Morning.

Michigan State Police say they were called to the scene on I-75 near Beecher Road around 1 a.m. Monday after the bear was spotted in the roadway.

The vehicle that was involved in the crash had already left the scene when troopers arrived.

Authorities contacted the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division, who took possession of the bear carcass for further investigation.

It is still unclear what led to the crash or whether anyone in the vehicle was injured.

A bear sighting in that area is pretty uncommon, according to the DNR website. Black bears are the only type of bears found in Michigan, with 90 percent of them found in the Upper Peninsula and the rest in the northern parts of the Lower Peninsula.

Average adult black bears stand less than three feet tall at the shoulder when on all fours and are approximately three to five feet in length, according to the DNR. Black bears are solitary animals, with the exception of females accompanied by cubs or yearlings and during the breeding season, when mature males and females can be seen together.
