AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) -- General Motors has submitted a proposal outlining the construction of a new electric vehicle parts plant on the site of the now-demolished Palace of Auburn Hills, a project that would create around one thousand new jobs.
GM will use the proposed facility to supply and pre-assemble parts for its Orion Township plant, which is currently under construction and will begin manufacturing Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra electric pickup trucks by the end of 2024.
Developing the Auburn Hills site will require an estimated investment of $200 million and is expected to create approximately one-thousand jobs, staffing three shifts.
The automotive company first approached officials in Auburn Hills in March 2022 before submitting draft plans in July 2022.
If the project is approved, construction of the 1-million-square-foot light industrial building would begin in July 2023 and be finished in November 2024.
The Auburn Hills Planning Commission will consider the project next Wednesday. It would then go to the City Council for final approval.
In related news, Governor Whitmer spoke at a Borg Warner EV facility in Hazel Park on Friday, as the company announced investments that will create 186 new jobs.
"Things are moving fast," Whitmer said of electric vehicles, "and that's why we've got to be on the cutting edge. We've got to aggressively pursue all opportunities and try to make sure that we continue to lead in mobility."
