GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police have launched an investigation after a Grand Rapids police officer fatally shot a man on Monday morning.
Grand Rapids police officials say an officer stopped a vehicle around 8 a.m. near Nelson Avenue and Griggs Street, and after initial contact, the driver got out of the car and fled.
Authorities say the officer, who was working alone at the time of the traffic stop, chased the driver on foot, while another passenger in the car stayed put.
There was a lengthy physical altercation and struggle between the officer and the driver, police said. At some point during that struggle, the officer's weapon discharged, fatally striking the suspect, whose name has not been released.
The officer -- a member of the department since 2015 -- was injured during the tussle with the suspect, police said, but did not go to a hospital for medical treatment.
The officer was placed on administrative leave.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said their department will review the officer's body camera, which fell off during the struggle, and footage from inside the vehicle. He expects the footage will be released to the public "sometime next week."
Police officials said during a late Monday afternoon press conference the reason for the initial traffic stop was still unclear.
Investigators are currently questioning the other person who was in the vehicle, along with other witnesses.
No names or other details have been released yet.
Michigan State Police are investigating this incident.
