HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) -- The judge who berated a 72-year old cancer patient for not keeping up with yard work has been censured by Hamtramck's City Council in a 5-0 vote.

The City Council approved the measure to censure 31st District Court Judge Alexis Krot Tuesday night following the Jan. 10 court hearing that went viral all over social media.

The resolution said that the judge's action’s towards 72-year-old Burhan Chowdhury “shined a negative light on the city of Hamtramck and tarnished the image” worldwide.

A censure doesn't remove a public official from their office, instead it acts as a public reprimanding by a governmental body.

Krot issued a public apology last week saying she made a mistake and is embarrassed in the way she handled Chowdhury's case. She also reported herself for judicial misconduct.

During a court hearing over Zoom for his $100 fine, Chowdery told Krot that he was unable to keep up with his yard work because his cancer treatments made him weak.

"If I could give you jail time on this, I would," said Krot.

Krot told Chowdhury during the hearing that he should be "ashamed" of himself.
