TROY (WWJ) -- A Macomb County man was arrested for drunken driving, according to police, after he made some new friends at a restaurant and invited them to follow him to his boat.
Troy Police said the incident happened early Tuesday, June 6, in the area of John R Rd. and E Big Beaver Rd. in Troy.
While out on patrol, police said officers spotted two vehicles that were speeding, at around 12:15 a.m., before pulling into the parking lot of a Speedway gas station that was closed.
Officers followed the vehicles, activated their overhead lights and made contact with both drivers.
The first driver, a 31-year-old Harrison Township man, told officers that he'd just met the people in the other at at a restaurants, and that they were following him back to his place to go on his boat.
The second driver did not show any signs of impairment and was released from the scene.
According to the police report, officers speaking with the first driver noted he was slurring his words, and that he smelled like booze.
After the manfailed a series of field sobriety tests, he blew a 0.16% BAC (blood alcohol concentration) on a breathalyzer test — which is twice the legal limit for driving in Michigan.
The driver was arrested and taken to the Troy Police lock-up where a Chemical Breath Test showed a 15% BAC.
He was issued a citation for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI).
His name was not released.
