SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- After basically a one-year break due to the pandemic, traditional Black Friday shopping is back.
The holiday season is officially underway the day after Thanksgiving, with shoppers out in droves in metro Detroit.
Reporting from the thick of things, WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites said — despite staffing shortages and supply chain concerns — there was a steady stream of shoppers going in and out of Best Buy in Southfield, early Friday morning.
What are they shopping for?
"I just bought a new laptop for school and playing games on," one young woman told Lites.
"Everything for the grandkids... a TV!" another shopper said.
A survey by the National Retail Federation found that 66% of people in the U.S. plan to shop this weekend, with 108 million Americans expected to shop in person or online on Black Friday.
Shoppers who headed out to metro Detroit-area malls, which have been struggling during the pandemic, reported sizable crowds.
At Twelve Oaks in Novi, shoppers stood in a long line at clothing retailer PacSun, which advertised buy-one-get-one deals on denim, and hoodies for $19.95.
Per tradition, many big box retailers opened early for sales on Friday.
Among them was Walmart, which will stay open Friday until 11 p.m.
Bath & Body Works and Bed, Bath & Beyond both opened at 6 a.m., as well as Meijer, which will be open until midnight.
Best Buy, Target and T.J. Maxx will all stay open until 10 p.m. on Friday.
