ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WWJ) – HopCat, the popular restaurant chain known for its Cosmik Fries and large craft beer selection, is reportedly returning to Royal Oak.

The HopCat in Royal Oak – previously located at 208 W. Fifth Street in Royal Oak – closed back in 2020, following an apparent dispute between owner BarFly Ventures and the building’s landlord.

Now HopCat is making a return to downtown Royal Oak, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

The restaurant will reportedly move into two spaces on South Main Street which were previously occupied by bd’s Mongolian Grill and Noodles World Kitchen (aka Noodles and Company), according to the Freep story. The bd’s Mongolian Grill is vacant, while the Noodles location a few doors down remains open.

It was not immediately clear how the setup a few doors apart would work or when the new location would open.

The original Royal Oak HopCat location opened back in 2017 in the space previously occupied by Woody’s.

At the time the Royal Oak location closed, officials said they intended to return to the city.

HopCat has seven Michigan locations, including two in Southeast Michigan – Ann Arbor and Midtown Detroit – as well as one in Indianapolis, Ind. and one in Lincoln, Neb.
