(WWJ) – It’s not uncommon for Michigan to “experience all four seasons in one week.”
Well, it looks like it's one of those weeks.
After getting hit with a mid-April dose of snow on Monday, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says Metro Detroit is gearing up for some warmer temperatures this weekend – much warmer.
Thompson says this latest round of “weather whiplash” in Metro Detroit will see a big shift of temperatures possibly climbing up to around 80 degrees.
AccuWeather is forecasting Saturday's high temp in Detroit as 79 and getting even warmer on Sunday, with 82.
But will that be the end of the whiplash? Probably not, Thompson says.
“And we’re not done there, because it looks like the chillier weather is gonna return later next week. We could be talking about highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s again by the middle of next week," he said.
As for whether any more snow is on the way, he says “I am wondering if we see a few snowflakes next week.” Though he doesn’t expect any accumulation, there could at least be some snowflakes flying as temperatures drop again.
Thompson called it a “big roller coaster run we’re on right now.”
He says Metro Detroit is “a good bit above” the typical average amount of snowfall for the month of April, with about 4.1 inches between this week’s storm and snowfall at the beginning of April.
It’s nowhere near the snowiest April this area has ever seen, though, coming in at No. 19, so far. The snowiest April in Metro Detroit was way back in 1886 with 25.7 inches.
The biggest snowstorm on record in Detroit actually happened that month – 24.5 inches on April 6.
He says the snow this month isn’t uncommon. Since 1885, there have only been seven Aprils without any snow at all.
