(WWJ) There's a construction alert this weekend for drivers who travel I-75 in Oakland County.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) says crews will be closing about 15 miles of I-75 in both directions between Square Lake Road and 8 Mile Road to allow for bridge work as part of the ongoing "Modernize 75" project.
LISTEN to WWJ on the Audacy App.
Starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, and continuing until early Sunday morning, Sept. 12, the southbound lanes of I-75 will be closed. Southbound will reopen by 8 a.m. Sunday, to accommodate traffic heading to Ford Field for Detroit Lions season opener, MDOT said.
All northbound lanes of I-75 will be closed all weekend; from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday.
Along with setting the new bridge beams on the 11 Mile Road overpass, workers will be demolishing the Stephenson Highway and Bellaire pedestrian bridges over I-75.
During the closure, northbound I-75 traffic will be detoured west on 8 Mile to northbound M-1 (Woodward Ave.), then eastbound Square Lake Road back to northbound I-75. Traffic will be able to access northbound I-75 from 14 Mile Road and points north. Southbound I-75 traffic will use westbound Square Lake Road to southbound M-1, then eastbound 8 Mile Road back to southbound I-75.
Prior to the freeway closure, crews will begin closing ramps at 9 p.m. and start freeway lane closures at 10 p.m. All ramps to northbound I-75 will be closed from Davison Freeway to 12 Mile Road. All ramps to southbound I-75 will be closed from M-59 to 9 Mile Road.
Stay with WWJ for updates throughout the closure, every 10 minutes on the 8s.
