ANN ARBOR (WWJ) – Ann Arbor was one of the hardest hit areas by Wednesday’s ice storm, with widespread damage to trees and power lines across the city.
One large tree was reported down across the road in the area of Devonshire and Londonderry. As officer Howard Cooper was working to remove the tree from the road, a van pulled up and the driver got out to help.
The good Samaritan turned out to be Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh. Cooper gave Harbaugh a pair of work gloves and they got to work.
Body camera footage posted to the Ann Arbor Police Department’s Twitter page Thursday afternoon shows the encounter.
The two are heard strategizing and working together to clear the tree little by little. After about 10 minutes, Cooper and Harbaugh were able to get the tree moved enough to clear one lane of traffic.
“What’s your name?” Harbaugh asks after the pair finished their work. “Cooper, nice to meet you. I’m Jim”
“You as well. Thank you, sir. You’re a good man,” Cooper says.
“Hey, feel free to spread the word on that,” Harbaugh jokes, before thanking the officer for his service and getting back in his vehicle.
“We thank Coach Harbaugh for being a valued member of the Ann Arbor community and helping out Ofc Cooper,” police officials tweeted.
