PINCKNEY (WWJ) -- A Livingston County parent with a CPL is facing charges after he illegally brought a firearm into a school building while volunteering, leading to the gun falling on the floor in front of students.
On Mar. 17, the parent was helping out in the gym at Navigator Upper Elementary in Pinckney when his gun fell out of its holster and landed on the floor. Nothing else occurred, and no one was hurt.
The incident was reported to school officials, and the man quickly took the gun back to his car, per the Livingston Daily.
Despite the presence of a weapon, the building was not placed on lockdown because there was no active threat to students.
According to the school district, the parent is a "well-known, active and engaged volunteer." The man is also a CPL holder.
In a statement, the school's principal and superintendent said that they understand the parent is apologetic, however, they cannot trivialize how dangerous the incident could have been, per the Livingston Daily.
Though they respect the right to carry a firearm, they wished to remind everyone that -- even with a CPL -- guns are not allowed on school property.
The parent is expected to be arraigned in court on Apr. 14. The nature of the charges has not been disclosed at this time.
Additionally, the defendant is now banned from working as a volunteer in the school district.
